Text Response

Dear Ms. Kerr

I completely agree with what you have said on the topic of slang. Nevertheless You have been looking at it in a very biased way. You have mentioned all of the negative points, I have a wider perspective on this subject.

Now if we look at Shakespeare he was known to use slang. Which as we know was not considered normal in his era. What is the definition of slang? It is used very loosely and thrown everywhere, any word which we are unaware of then we consider it to be slang. This should not be the case. It is an informal way of speaking, using non-standard words or phrases which is normally used in a culture or within a society. There are many words which we owe to Shakespeare, and these words would have been considered slang terms; these words are as follows assassination, bedazzled, cold blooded, belongings, eventful etc. Are these words to be discarded because they were considered slang?

In our generation it has become a way of communication and acceptance, we are prejudged and it has come to the point where we will not become some-ones friend or just isolate them, not based on character or personality, but the way in which they speak. we now have misguided intentions and pleasures and this has influenced the way that we speak as a society. I believe that these words have become a part of the vocabulary in my generation due to the actions which we carry out, e.g dirty actions and as I mentioned before, misguided pleasures. I understand that you may not see the future of English being very strong, but i don’t see it going downhill either. A language can not be ruined but it can only be developed upon. Unlike Latin no one used it anymore so it became a dead language. This will not happen to English and I’m sure of it.

The English Dictionary has unfortunately adopted these words into their books and on-line. I see your worry concerning this issue but I am contemplating of accepting this way of speaking as it has become a new type of language. A way the youth understand each other, I understand that you believe that the English language has become corrupted with slang, the “eloquent words” being replaced or discarded by my generation. As a matter of fact if we look into the past a few hundred years past Shakespeare we would see that the supposed eloquent words might even be considered slang. Why ? It is simple, the reason is that it was a way of communicating, and was a new type of language which only the people of that era would understand. Is this not what we are doing ?

You mention a point which stands out to me. you said its a battle for young people to prove were not all apathetic and without a doubt this is true. As a continuation you say ASBO wielding yobs who can’t communicate properly and this is also true. I don’t necessarily see the correlation in-between the way we speak and the lack of speech, or the lack of interest to speak with someone. The problem of being anti social or uninterested is not due to the change in form or structure of the way in which we speak. So the way that you have related the two I am not completely in accordance with your statement.

I agree with you, when you say that these language developments and new words, simply do us no favour. We now have a completely distorted image. This is true the way we speak has reflected the way we are. We are obligated to speak the English that wants to be heard by certain people. It comes to a point where we no longer recognise how we are speaking, and we are using these non eloquent words. Now these words that are spoken and thrown around, will eventually stop being used. So you’re right in saying that these words will come and go but unfortunately slang will never stop. The only reason for which certain words may become unused, is because another word has most probably replaced it. This happens continuously throughout the course of every ones lives  e.g wicked to sick, fugly to butters and now clapped. This whole idea of slang being eradicated from our youth and society is way too ambitious. So as you said ” As a member of a younger generation, partly responsible for their linguistic calamities, I can only apologise” But out of this, will come a way of speaking, which many people will neither hate nor love but simply use. So I do not apologise for what we are doing, but I apologise for looking bad whilst doing it.

Yours sincerely

Pablo

I was only young when the war broke out. It was like something I had never seen before; faces of joy would change to faces of grief. I would see people not much older than my brother going into war to fight for something that I hadn’t understood yet. They would put their lives on the line for some reason. Why would they be willing to put their lives on the line for their friends? For their family? For me ? I wouldn’t understand why people had to die for whatever reason it may have been. As I grew up I would see many families completely destroyed and separated, including mine. It wasn’t a pleasant view or experience. My brother & father had died when he went to this war. As I didn’t have anyone next to me, my desire was to be with someone, someone that would spend all their time with me. My father always told me ” una donna e come una rosa nel deserto, prendersi cura di quella rosa ” to take care of a rose in the desert does not mean ruining its life. My mother’s life was ruined without anyone next to her to help her and support her and I was not willing to let that happen again to any girl.

I was not able to receive love from my mother. I would just receive anger and isolation from her. I began to look for love and a passion in something else, anything. I was never brave enough to disrespect the teachings which were set in me by my parents. I could not be arrogant, violent nor selfish; it simply wasn’t a part of me. I would look for a girl that was willing to become my friend and companion. I was on a journey where no one understood me and couldn’t help me. As the  months passed by i was constantly confronted with the thought of my father and brother. It was a never ending thought, why would they go and leave us, it just didn’t seem right. Some years passed and I went on to work and provide food for me and my mother.

I would travel along the countryside of Italy everyday to go work I would see incredible things. I would see these amazing birds soar through the air, where the sky is their limit, the air bending as their feathers slice through it. As I look down from the skies, I see the beasts of the earth resting on what God has placed on the land for them; feeling the delicate grass on their feet as they stride through the land in search for their shelter. As night slowly creeps up on me the sky changes from light to dark with the sunset displaying its wave goodnight with these warm colours , and the stars would greet me as they appear one by one showing itself. As I look into the sky I would forget all my troubles and remember that my creator is watching over me and taking care of me.

My everyday journey from the city to the countryside was something I would never take advantage as i was able to see the good, the bad, to see betrayal and loyalty; to see love and hate. My aim was always to provide for my home and i was rewarded with these amazing sights as i would see the sun set and rise.Everyday was different and unique in its own way.On my journey to work I was encountered with a beautiful lady she was caring and compassionate towards me nevertheless I didnt pay attention to her and carried on but she saw something about me.I was confused, I was simply a young man holding up a broken home. She would walk with me on my journey tell me stories and teach me things. As we walked she told me about her father which also went to war and said” he was a good man, he always loved me and took care of me, but clearly not enough” I could understand the way that she felt. She was just like me, living in a broken home. She was the rose that my dad told me to take care of.

On the journey to work I had taken another route , so as I travelled along my path I would see my boss telling me to hurry up to work, I could see him from afar that he wasn’t angry or happy but worried and confused. I started running as I got closer I could see that the land was destroyed, all my work destroyed. A discovery was made; bones, weapons, could my brother and father be here underneath our feet?.

Ban the burkha

Ban the Burkha debate

This piece of clothing is just a way of young Muslim women to symbolise how our society is multicultural and diverse and even philosophically tolerant. Unfortunately this is a piece of clothing which imprisons women and is a potential threat to security, the reason behind this is because if we were all to wear this then catching criminals would be a nightmare, and would be near to impossible. As this is part of a religion and mindset of people, when they go to the airport they would not be asked to take of their Burkha simply because they do not want to go against their belief, but by doing this we would not be able to identify the person which would want to board the plane.

This is an extreme security risk due to the fact that face recognition would not be available.

There was an article talking about how a woman that was not Muslim wore this piece of clothing and when she went to the airport to migrate to a different country she was not questioned or asked to take the Burkha of and even though these security officers didn’t recognise this woman and they weren’t able to identify her they still let the woman through and she went on the plane unrecognised

not only is security an issue, but it is also about their religion itself, they do not HAVE to wear these burkes and cover their whole body as we can see that in the Koran verse 24 chapter 30 it says that “men should lower their gaze” when meeting a women to not stare in a wrongful way, but if he woman are being covered from head to toe, then this phrase/instruction would not be necessary.

Another discussion about banning the burka  is that if everyone has equal rights and men and women have equal rights then that would mean that everyone has the right to mask their faces, and that would become an outrage and no one would be happy.

also another one of the problems would be the women’s health, in the process of them covering their bodies they hardly receive any sunlight and no exposure,  a recent study in Arab Emirates that all but four were deficient in vitamin D, and the situation in Arab emirates are better than here in the up where it is really damp and dark, unfortunately our society is already seeing a rise in rickets and other bone related diseases, for the first time since the World War 1

  • health
  • security
  • society
  • religion

These are all points which many of the people which wear the burkha do not actually think about until its being affected and then there is nothing else to do.

Torture

Torture; what is it? The action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or in order to force them to do or say something. It is something so unethical and morally wrong. This happens everyday and we blame the big corporations such as FBI or CIA. But what about the small groups that torture people nearly every day? People such as ISIS, Al Qaeda. We do not take them into account and we do not stop this horrible process. But we simply let it carry on. The truth is that if we don’t stop this way of obtaining information, from the root, then it will continue to grow.

Some people might argue that Torture isn’t necessary evil to save innocent lives, they may argue that it is the only way to gain invaluable information at times of crisis. However this isn’t always the case. The people being tortured may be innocent and may genuinely not know anything at all. This uncertainty is when the unethical and immoral component must take precedent. It is a certainty that there have been many innocent people that have testified under the act of torture. It is also a certainty that the people conducting this act would not have had  ‘enough evidence’ to find this person guilty yet still tortured them. The research shows that information provided by torture victims was unreliable. This is largely because torture victims would say anything to make it stop.

Instead we should be looking towards alternative methods. We should seek to develop our understanding of  practices such as reverse psychology. We should seek to fund scientific research into medical solutions such as truth pills. We should not seek to torture potentially innocent members of society to the point where they are on the verge of dying.

So now enemies of fundamental human rights will often site the “ticking bomb case”.Every second is precious hence the name. As movies have shown and the testimonies, torture will leave you with no strength to carry on. People would argue and say that torture is horrible . Let me ask you something? What if your family are in the situation of becoming hostages and  there is one person which has the information need to save them. Would you do anything to save them, even if it means torturing them?

Torture destroys many people’s families and many people’s lives. The memory would haunt them for life. They would then be paranoid, they would no longer live in peace and wouldn’t trust in anyone. It’s not something pleasant but sometimes necessary. These groups and organisations need to understand what they are doing and who they are doing it to. As you can see I am talking to you more about family. The reason for this is because this is a situation where we cannot apply our mind but use feelings and emotions to decide whether it is right or wrong. The figures no longer matter. Pain will only be temporary and will pass eventually, but the grief of hundreds of families will not pass; it will remain there for an extremely long time.

summary of events happening in volume 1 & 2

Volume 1

what happened in this volume was that we are introduced to who Victor Frankestein was and who his family was, this is when we are introduced to his two brothers and his parents, his brothers were called William and Ernest then we are told that his father is called Alphonse Frankestein and his wife Catherine, there was also a young girl which was called Elizabeth which was adopted by Alphonse Frankestein and Catherine because Alphons’ sister had passed away ,then it goes on to talk about how Victor is interested or more like marvelled at the mystical philosophers and alchemists.”…..”unfortunately these were all writers which his father would not be on the same page with so he wouldn’t agree with them. Unfortunately Elizabeth had been ill but even though she had survived this illness, Caroline(Frankesteins mother) had not been able to survive and passed away because she had caught it from Elizabeth. The dying of wish of Caroline had been that Frankestein would marry Elizabeth, but after this he went to a university which was when he met two professors which had introduced him to more modern science and this is when Frankestein completely changes his way of thinking about modern science and he starts gaining more information and knowledge about the Modern science ways. With this marvellous introduction to modern science he challenges himself to studying and working day and night to be able to understand the principle which he sought, which was the principle of life and after 2 years of pure hard labour and the act of neglecting the families for two years he finally found what he was looking for. As he achieves to somehow understand what the principle of life sort of is he goes unto creating a new race which would hold him high as his creator, Unfortunately as he created this new race he did not realise how horrific the creation truly was until after the monster actually opens his eyes, at the sight of this frightening monster he runs away from it. He was so fatigued after days of work that he fell asleep, he had a nightmare where he would see Elizabeth become into his dying mother in his own arms and worms would crawl out of her. Little did he know that the monster was standing next to his bed and he as he awakens because of it he runs away in horror. As he runs he encounters a friend called cleveral which travelled with him back to Frankenstein lodging, at this moment Victor could no longer see the monster and finally escaped. unfortunately on the return to his home in ingolstadt he finds out that they had found William dead strangled so they go to Geneva in an uneasy search for the murderer of his brother, then he spots his monster and assumes that the monster had done it but a servant of Victors family was accused of having been the murderer as she was found with the chain that William wore on that night that he was strangled. Victor knowing that he would be thought of as crazy he did not mention anything about his creation nor what he had done, the servant Justine was thought guilty and was executed, the two lives of his loved one and his servant rested heavily on his shoulders.

Volume 2

In this volume we are more seeing into the world of Victors creation and what hes going through, so the main theme here would be how he is not accepted by anyone, wherever he goes he would be rejected and people would run away from him, this was not what the creation had wanted for himself but it was what he had been born into, if you could say it like that. He didn’t want to be created but he was, so he had to find a way of being accepted. We see that at the beginning Victor goes into mont blanc in search for the monster he encounters it, but it wasn’t a very surprising nor calm encounter, the monster had a talk with its creation, and its pretty much what most people that believe in a creator would want, but if we were to think about it if our creator was to create us and run away from us and cause everyone to run away from us because of our appearance we would hate them completely no matter what excuse is given. The first encounter this monster had with any human was in a hut where he made all its inhabitants flee from it. Then he went into a small village where he was also rejected but in this village there were angry villagers which chased him down him, so the monster had to flee from them, then he went to take refuge in hovel ( this is a small constructed dwelling) where it would allow him to look unto a cottage. in this cottage he would overhear conversations where he was able to learn and quicken his knowledge about more human ways, this happened in the space of a year or so, where the monster had enough courage to go to it, in this cottage there was a blind man which lived there with his family, here before the monster is able to make his point and his case, Felix ( the son of the blind man) rushes in and quickly starts to beat the monster as he believed the father was being threatened, in a massive rage the monster goes and burns down the cottage in which this family had lived in. Then when the monster realises the origin of his creation his plans to return to geneva, and meet his creator, on his journey to Geneva he tries to save a girl that was drowning but was shot by the girls companion in the attempt to save the girls life. He also encounters a young boy called William Frankestein, this was Victor Frankesteins brother unfortunately the young brother called the monster hideous, in his attempt to escape what happens is that the monster kills the young boy and frames the servant, Justine for the murder. The creature demands a woman to be created for him but then Victor puts one condition to doing so, this was for The monster to leave Europe for ever.

“Depression”

Depression

Sometimes we are good at hiding our emotions, but sometimes we get too good at it and what we don’t realise is that this is actually harming us, How ?. Well we aren’t letting anyone help us or letting anyone notice if we are in pain or not. Unfortunately  hiding your emotions starts to become your second nature and then we suddenly have no control over it and we wouldn’t know if we are hiding our emotions or not .

This relates to many people but something else that would somehow relate  to someone would be the fact that those people that are in pain that are hiding their emotions from us tend to be our friends and our own family sometimes, and we probably wouldn’t know until something tragic happens and thats when we would realise that that person was in pain and was actually going through something alone. I used to be that person that wouldn’t realize that my friends were going through something really bad or they would be depressed, that was until  one of my own friends tried committing suicide. Fortunately they weren’t able to find what they were looking for which was death but i started to simply observe their attitudes about life and what they truly thought of everyone and everything obviously we all have different opinions on different things but we can all realize when something bad has started happening and how they react towards certain things and when theres a sudden change.

Depression: This is a really big factor on someone having the desire to end their life and as I said it all starts with depression, they start feeling empty, they feel no love or care or fear and all these feelings are crucial in someone life, because if you don’t love your family or care about them or care about your family somehow or even just about yourself then you wouldn’t truly have the desire to actually end your life but not having this love and care would be a motivation towards that decision. If this feeling isn’t stopped at the root and it isn’t actually taken out then it could take control over your life and influence what you do and when you do it, it would also influence your actions, and this is what happens to many people and their lives, we have to understand that we have to be compassionate towards them because this feeling can occur in a teenager who could have lost their parents, lost someone that they really cared about also  it could occur in an adults life and sometimes it could affect them much more as they could have left one of their children and also someone that was really close to them. All of these things lead to depression but unfortunately there are some people that think that its an everyday joke. It really is’nt. We fail to understand what another person feels and when we suddenly notice we would try and think back when it might have started. Another way that depression could start getting involved in someones life would be when they start getting pushed away by those people that they most cared about, those people that they thought would always be there for them, and then because of this they start feeling like an outcast and they feel anti social towards everyone. Many times we hear the excuse of “Its just a phase” is it ? is it going to be just a phase when it could be his last moments here with us, we don’t take these things into account.

True friends: Who do we choose as our true friends, who do we call best friend, close friend or even brother/sister, as we are teenagers we have the tendency
